Wednesday Woolgathering

July 12, 2017 by Z.A. Maxfield

Rock shot me a goofy smile and that’s when I noticed his eyelashes were longer than a girl’s.

Every so often he’d look at me and start laughing and then I’d laugh too. It was so motherfucking undignified. I could only imagine ’Nando’s reaction to my new life at the Rocking C. He’d tell me to sack up and keep my eyes wide open.

You gotta use your big head, Gorrión. You gotta look out for number one, because nobody else will.

We chased the food with iced tea and ate homemade chocolate chip cookies for dessert. Again, ’Nando’s words came loud and clear.

Anything that seems too good to be true probably is.

“Why do you suppose Elena’s doing this?” I whispered.

“What do you mean?” he asked.

“Every single person at the Rocking C warned me to stay away from you. Now we’re on some kind of date, and you don’t think it’s weird?”

“It’s not a date.” He laughed. “If we ever go on a date, it won’t be to Bitterroot. Do you have a driver’s license?”

“Sorry. I had one, but it’s expired.”

“No problem. You can get one, though, right?” he asked.

“I need to get either a driver’s license or an ID within thirty days of my release. I was going to talk to the boss about getting a ride into the DPS.”

“Then maybe, if we ever go on a real date, you can drive.”

“I guess I could.”

I didn’t have a car, of course, but we were dreaming there. Making plans the way kids do: Wouldn’t it be cool if . . .

Nobody ever expects those dreams to come true.

public-domain-images-free-stock-photos-alley-ball-bowl-1000x662STRIKE NOW!

The Crossing Borders Rafflecopter giveaway has ONLY six days left to go. I’m not sure but I think I did a pretty piss poor job of setting it up. And maybe you can tell…

But NEVER fear!

a Rafflecopter giveaway

I’m still giving away one (1) signed copy of Crossing Borders, and three (3) Crossing Borders ebooks away. You go to the Rafflecopter thingie to enter and gives you options. You may do a couple of the things more than once, it’s set up to allow you to go back and earn more entries each day.

And here’s the thing. I have created this awesome new website! If you tool around and click all the linkies, you might see books you haven’t read, discover things you didn’t know about the books you love, and even get a fun surprise!

New Year’s Eve Progressive Dinner

December 31, 2014 by Z.A. Maxfield

Welcome to the New Year’s Eve M/M Writers’ Progressive Dinner!

My Cowboy HomecomingIt hardly seems like a year has gone by since my last New Year’s Eve Post. I’ve had a fabulous time. I’ve made friends and gotten fit, and I’ve been to five conventions. I had a blast. Next year, I’m using more time to reconnect with my muses. I’m taking time to rebuild my career. I’ll be creating more and traveling less, because I have a hefty schedule and a lot of unfinished projects that are crying out for my time…

I’ll let you know more about that later, but for now, I want to share a recipe with you that I believe is something Birdie Tripplehorn from My Cowboy Homecoming would have put on the table for her growing boys in happier times, before she lost the plot and moved into her own little delusional world.

I’m calling it Birdie Tripplehorn’s Pantry Chicken and Dumplings. I cooked this a lot when my kids were growing up. They adore the dish and it takes no time. I can make it from pantry staples and frozen chicken breasts whenever the mood strikes, unlike real deal Chicken and Dumplings, southern style, which I’ve never really mastered. Serve this along with a simple salad or some steamed vegetables for a complete meal.

Here you go, my main dish recipe! Don’t forget to check out the contest rules and the menu below, visit and comment at everyone’s blogs. As writers, we know your time is precious, and we love that you follow our books, our blogs, and our newsletters. We couldn’t do it without you!

So here’s a comfort classic right from my cupboard to yours!easy-chicken-and-dumplings-a6da32e0-5063-4e9f-877c-518ac941b5dc-ss

Birdie Tripplehorn’s Pantry Chicken and Dumplings

2 T. olive oil

1 T. butter

8 Boneless skinless chicken breasts

1 cup diced onions

3 tablespoons tomato paste

10 oz. pkg. frozen veg mix; diced carrots and peas

2 cans Campbell’s Healthy Request Cream of Mushroom soup

32 oz. low sodium Chicken stock

1 bay leaf

 for the dumplings:

4 cups Bisquick baking mix

1 1/3 cups milk

Cooking directions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large, heavy-bottom Dutch oven.
  2. Add butter and let it foam out.
  3. Lightly salt and pepper chicken breasts on both sides.
  4. Brown chicken breasts on both sides in butter and oil.
  5. Remove Chicken breasts to a plate and cover.
  6. Add onions, scraping up any brown bits. Sauté until translucent.
  7. Add tomato paste and cook for 2 minutes until it starts to smell rich and sweet.
  8. Add veg mix, stir 3 minutes or until thawed.
  9. Whisk together soup and stock and add to pot, along with bay leaf.
  10. Add chicken back to pot with any accumulated juices and cover; bring to a low boil.
  11. While you’re bringing the soup/chicken mix back to a boil, make dumplings according to package directions, which means–pretty much–add milk to baking mix and stir until just moistened like drop biscuits. This is a large amount of dumplings, but if Birdie’s boys were anything like my little tribe, they had to have some dumpling with each bite of chicken! Halve it, if you like fewer dumplings.
  12. Remove the bay leaf at this time; it’s easier to find it now. With the chicken stew at a low boil, drop biscuit mixture into gravy, one spoonful at a time on top of chicken. (Do this by dipping the spoon into the hot gravy, and then into the biscuit mix each time.) This might look like a mess. It probably will. It will, however, according to my kids, taste really good when it has finished cooking.
  13. Cook at a very low boil uncovered for ten minutes.
  14. Cover and cook for ten minutes more.

Serves eight (or six with hearty appetites.)

One lucky commenter will win a signed copy of Eddie, Grime Doesn’t Pay! (I’ll even mail it internationally if that applies.) Winners will be chosen on Jan 6th…

More Housekeeping!

August 4, 2014 by Z.A. Maxfield

FugitiveColor_432I’m playing catch up here, folks. I can’t believe it’s been nearly three months since Fugitive Color came out. Friday may be for Fugitives, but Monday is for Mea Culpas…

At some point, I think I lost the last thread to my sanity because I looked at my posts to find where I’d announced the winners of my Fugitive Color Audio book contest, and I didn’t have one. Not even a pending post…

What. The. HELL??

So instead of just one person winning, I picked three of the commenters from that post, and I’m sending each of you a complimentary copy of the audio book.

I really do have a personal assistant, and I’m no longer going to be afraid to use him… I LOVE writing. LOVE it. I love disappearing into my writing cave and coming out holding some kind of newborn, whether it’s a book or a blog post or a novella or a short story, or simply a fun email I sent to a friend.

The whole calendar thing? Making appointments and keeping them? Remember when things are due? Updating twitter and Facebook and my blog? Not so much…

*sighs*

I am THIS close to finishing some new cowboys. THIS *pinches fingers together* close. But I really don’t want anyone to think I’m a tool, or that I offer prizes and then fail to deliver.

So…The winners are:

Michelle, Readercat, and Paula!

Look for emails with instructions today!

It’s What…? It’s AUGUST???

August 3, 2014 by Z.A. Maxfield

DEAR GOD. IT’S AUGUST.  It’s really August. And it’s raining in LA today, so it feels like New Orleans.

Today, my dearest, gentle readers, I must make the apologies.

HomeTheHardWay_500x750I have been so busy. I’ve been writing, my offspring have been graduating and moving in and out of college dorms. I’ve attended Romantic Times in New Orleans and RWA2014 in San Antonio.

I went on a research trip so I could find out all about New Mexican flora and fauna. I have been on a health kick and a food plan. I have plumbed the depths of despair, “Wait–Are you fucking telling me fried zucchini doesn’t count as a vegetable?” and flown to the heights of happiness…

See, the thing is, I actually don’t manage my time very well. I know that there are books coming out. I know my kids have move in dates and move out dates. I plan for all the eventualities, like conference, and such, but stuff ALWAYS happens.

And housekeeping gets left for last. MEA CULPA. Here’s a list of Sunday Brunch winners I haven’t announced that has gotten so long it’s laughable: Bear with me, and I will delegate this in future so someone will do this better than I ever did: My beloved author assistant, William.

IMG_0143

The thing is, I LIKE picking the winners and doing the e-mailing. So I kept putting it off until I had a nice big block of time. Guess what? I never found one!

So: AT LAST, my Sunday Brunch Winners have been chosen and are as follows:

***If for some reason you don’t receive your gift card from me in the next twenty-four hours please email at zamaxfield @ zamaxfield (dot) com to let me know***

Friday is for Fugitives!

May 8, 2014 by Z.A. Maxfield

FugitiveColor_432I recently had the opportunity to re-release Fugitive Color, the 2010 novella with a new cover, and TA-DAH in audiobook format!

It’s quite cool to think my readers could be anywhere, roaring down lone country roads while listening to my book. *shivers*

To start things off with a GREAT BIG WIN, I’m offering a free ebook and audiobook to ONE lucky reader.  All you have to do is comment below. I’ll be heading out to Romantic Times Booklovers Convention on Monday, so you have until Mother’s Day Sunday (May 11) at Midnight EST to comment for the opportunity to win. Let me know what you’re thinking: What’s your favorite audiobook so far? How do you feel when you’re listening to sex scenes at a stoplight? Do you ever pull over to rewind parts you missed? Or like me, do you ever find yourself driving down the street so engrossed in the story you feel like “Cloak and Dagger Books” will be just down the next street on the right hand side or Jack Reacher is going to roar by at top speed in someone’s “borrowed” Bentley?

Fugitive Color remains unchanged from the earlier version, so if you already have it, consider picking up the companion audio book.

Here’s the blurb for Fugitive Color.

Max Lancaster’s neighbor — his muse the young ballerina Elena– has gone missing. Between secrets from his past and the fact that he’s altering his work in his sleep, he’s worried that he’s lost his mind.

By the time forensic artist Sumner Ellison arrives as part of the investigation even Max can see himself in the role of person of interest. Sumner Ellison doesn’t believe that Max killed Elena, yet he isn’t certain Max is entirely sane.

Sumner offers Max oblivion in bed and unflinching honesty. Max takes what Sumner offers, losing himself in the younger man’s body while hiding his heart from Sumner’s love.

When doubt pulls them apart, it takes the power of Max’s passion and the purity of Sumner’s faith to create a love that won’t fade away over time.
