Release week sisters.

August 5, 2015 by Z.A. Maxfield

Crossing Borders, is a re-release, but I have two release week “sisters” whose brand new books I’ve been waiting for!

I should probably reiterate my thoughts on reviews here: I don’t review books because I’m not qualified to review on literary merit in any thoughtful, scholarly way. My friends don’t often give me their books. I buy them because I like reading them. When I talk about another author’s book, I’m speaking as a reader and a fan. The books here are from two series I happened to be waiting for because I’m hooked!

Knave

Jim Carney has a full time job—running from himself. Since he walked out on his wealthy family at sixteen because he’d wrecked his best friend’s life over some yaoi graphic novels, Jim has lived a macho, blue-collar existence of too much booze and too little responsibility.

Then Billy Ballew, the man Jim most admires, gives Jim a chance to come through as his construction supervisor. For once, Jim is determined to make someone proud. Then Jim goes in for a physical for his new job, and his yaoi dream comes to life in the form of cardiologist Ken Tanaka. Jim discovers he has two heart problems—a wonky mitral valve and a serious attraction to his doctor.

But Ken is a major player, and Jim might be just a notch on the doc’s stethoscope. To Ken, Jim is unforgettable—but the living embodiment of his traditional family’s worst nightmares. How come the minute Jim decides to be responsible, he finds himself taking care of his kid brother, getting a proposal from a wealthy woman, making a deal with the devil, and winding up in the hospital—when all he really wants is the Knave of Broken Hearts?

Editor’s note: **Read it, loved it, this is a terrific, witty, warm series. Tara Lain at her best.**

Against the GrainAs the fiercest Defense Agent at the THIRDS, Destructive Delta’s Ash Keeler is foul-mouthed and foul-tempered. But his hard-lined approach always yields results, evident by his recent infiltration of the Coalition. Thanks to Ash’s skills and the help of his team, they finally put an end to the murdering extremist group for good, though not before Ash takes a bullet to save teammate Cael Maddock. As a result, Ash’s secrets start to surface, and he can no longer ignore what’s in his heart.

Cael Maddock is no stranger to heartache. As a Recon Agent for Destructive Delta, he has successfully maneuvered through the urban jungle that is New York City, picking up his own scars along the way. Yet nothing he’s ever faced has been more of a challenge than the heart of Ash Keeler, his supposedly straight teammate. Being in love isn’t the only danger he and Ash face as wounds reopen and new secrets emerge, forcing them to question old loyalties.

Editor’s note. **Charlie cannot write these fast enough for me. The audiobooks are awesome too. Please do not distract Charlie Cochet, as she is writing the next few books in this series, I hope. That is all.**

I cursed myself even as I began helping the boy pick up his shit. I had the broom out already because I was planning to sweep the patio after I got the ashtrays, and I used it to clean up the mess. As I was trying to get the smaller chunks of shattered porcelain I said, “I’m sorry. I’ll help you clean this up. I saw that asshole bothering you. Are you all right?”

The boy said nothing, just concentrated on picking up the silverware, scraping the bits of food off the concrete into his hands. I worried that he would cut himself.

“Here,” I said slightly louder. “I’ll get that, you go on ahead. I don’t want you cut.”

“Don’t bother,” said the man who caused the trouble in the first place. “It’s not like he can hear you.” The guy seemed to think this was funny and nudged his companion again. Fucking drunks. I’d been their patron fucking saint and I still couldn’t get over how much I loathed them.

“What?” I asked, though I did it politely, which was a stretch.

“He’s deaf, you asshole.” Amber Eyes picked up the tub and left, not looking back.

Well. When a cosmic joke like that comes your way, you have to laugh. Amber Eyes was probably the first guy in three years who I saw in color, and he was deaf. And me? The only human language I had anymore was music.

“You’re shitting me,” said ******, taking some scallops off his skewer and dipping them in tartar sauce. He looked up at ***** as he popped them in his mouth. He didn’t even chew before he was talking again, his mouth full of juicy grilled bits of shellfish. “How the hell does being naked and stroking yourself help?”

****** was so caught up in the story that he waved off the shocked gasps of the couple at the table adjacent to theirs.

Inwardly, ***** rolled his eyes. “Well, I guess it has to do with those self-same instincts and sensibilities I spoke of before. I think man is innately animal. We’d all lie around licking our balls all day like dogs if we could reach, right? Sure. I believe that if men had more flexible backs, or perhaps shorter torsos, we would have no civilization to speak of, but we’d all be completely in touch with the ‘other’. I think stroking myself naked just helps me get in touch with the ‘other’, you know?” He leaned on his hand, looking up at ****** innocently.

****** spooned up some clam chowder, nearly missing his mouth. “Ah, the other.”

“Of course.” ***** took a sip of his tea,

“For the record, you had me until we were all licking our balls all day,” he looked at his food in disgust. “And that was about three minutes longer than it should have taken.”

“For the record,” ***** told him, “You should probably never play poker with anyone.”

Good Luck, folks —–> Go!
