And the winners are…

March 16, 2018 by Z.A. Maxfield

Winners of the “Ides of March” Drawing!

Congrats to Pam, Annie, and Mary, to whom I just sent copies of Marie Kondo’s “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying up.”

It has become my passion to create a clutter-free organized, and dare I say it? Pleasant environment. I want to love where I work and cook and sleep.

We’re nowhere near that ideal yet, and, I doubt it will last, but in the meantime…

WIN THE DAY!

Wednesday Woolgathering

July 12, 2017 by Z.A. Maxfield

Rock shot me a goofy smile and that’s when I noticed his eyelashes were longer than a girl’s.

Every so often he’d look at me and start laughing and then I’d laugh too. It was so motherfucking undignified. I could only imagine ’Nando’s reaction to my new life at the Rocking C. He’d tell me to sack up and keep my eyes wide open.

You gotta use your big head, Gorrión. You gotta look out for number one, because nobody else will.

We chased the food with iced tea and ate homemade chocolate chip cookies for dessert. Again, ’Nando’s words came loud and clear.

Anything that seems too good to be true probably is.

“Why do you suppose Elena’s doing this?” I whispered.

“What do you mean?” he asked.

“Every single person at the Rocking C warned me to stay away from you. Now we’re on some kind of date, and you don’t think it’s weird?”

“It’s not a date.” He laughed. “If we ever go on a date, it won’t be to Bitterroot. Do you have a driver’s license?”

“Sorry. I had one, but it’s expired.”

“No problem. You can get one, though, right?” he asked.

“I need to get either a driver’s license or an ID within thirty days of my release. I was going to talk to the boss about getting a ride into the DPS.”

“Then maybe, if we ever go on a real date, you can drive.”

“I guess I could.”

I didn’t have a car, of course, but we were dreaming there. Making plans the way kids do: Wouldn’t it be cool if . . .

Nobody ever expects those dreams to come true.

Only 6 days left! Rafflecopter giveaway…

August 4, 2015 by Z.A. Maxfield

public-domain-images-free-stock-photos-alley-ball-bowl-1000x662STRIKE NOW!

The Crossing Borders Rafflecopter giveaway has ONLY six days left to go. I’m not sure but I think I did a pretty piss poor job of setting it up. Usually, I have my sweetheart William, The Author Conqueror Assistant, set these things up for me because, as we all know, I am a typing monkey. But this time I did it myself. And maybe you can tell…

But NEVER fear!

a Rafflecopter giveaway

I’m still giving away one (1) signed copy of Crossing Borders, and three (3) Crossing Borders ebooks away. You go to the Rafflecopter thingie to enter and gives you options. You may do a couple of the things more than once, it’s set up to allow you to go back and earn more entries each day.

And here’s the thing. I have created this awesome new website! If you tool around and click all the linkies, you might see books you haven’t read, discover things you didn’t know about the books you love, and even get a fun surprise!

Fall in love again!

August 3, 2015 by Z.A. Maxfield

Tomorrow is the day!

Get ready for the re-release of Crossing Borders. It’s been nearly ten years since I wrote that book. I was naive about the publishing industry. I was naive about people. I had no clue what I was doing. I had to get my daughter and her middle school friends to teach me how to punctuate dialogue.

Since I’ve written it a lot has changed. People don’t close their cell phones anymore and you can use your mobile phone in hospitals. The Healthcare Information Privacy Act makes it tougher to get information on a patient, but domestic parters have rights they didn’t used to have, and now marriage equality is the law of the land.

I had to really think about what I wanted to do with the book. Did I want to update the material and fix all my glaring mistakes, all the obvious signs I was a newbie writer who didn’t know what she was doing? Or did I want to preserve the experience for the readers who have shared how much they liked the book when they read it. In the end, I left Crossing Borders alone for the most part. It’s dated. It has technical flaws and factual flaws, but hopefully, it still retains its charm. Let’s do a rafflecopter! I’ll be giving away one signed print copy and three (3) ebook copies! The giveaway won’t go live until midnight, when the book does, and then, good luck!

a Rafflecopter giveaway

IF YOU HAVE READ CROSSING BORDERS THIS IS THE SAME BOOK. The only reason you might want it is for the very charming, handsome red-haired boy on the cover. Have you ever seen such blue eyes? Feel free to tell anyone you know who hasn’t read it how much you loved it. Spread the word far and wide.

Sparky is back in print and ebook from Samhain, Amazon, Barnes And Noble and BAM.

I’ve got a few copies I’ll be giving away at at GRL. But if the book means anything to you, please hit me up! I’ll get more if you want. Many people have mentioned Crossing Borders was their “male/male gateway drug”. LOL. My kids think that’s hilarious.

Here are five things you probably didn’t know about Crossing Borders:

  • When I originally wrote the book, it had an entirely different ending! One that, in retrospect, I am so glad I changed. Will I share what it was? No. Let’s just say that when an author makes an asinine choice and then changes it before the reader ever gets a chance to tell her all about it, it’s the better part of valor if she keeps it to herself.
  • Tristan’s and Michael’s mothers are both serious facets of my personality. I have been both those women (well, except the motorcycle part. I can barely ride a bicycle.) And that ginger boy Emma describes? The one who thought he wanted to be a priest? He sent me a sweet note after he read the book. *blush* I forgot I put that bit in.
  • One of my readers, who is now an editor for another publishing company, and had lunch Lucille’s after Border’s Bookstore closed. It was kind of a walk down memory lane. I’ve had readers tell me they live locally and they go to the places mentioned in the books for giggles. (Same with Long Way Home.)
  • I found out quite by accident that in California you don’t have to wear a bicycle helmet if you’re over eighteen. So there goes my plot! But some municipalities require helmets for all ages, as do many resorts, which is where I got the idea that it was illegal to ride without. As a side note: my husband suffered a crippling traumatic brain injury (as a young adult) in a pretty brutal bicycle accident. I recommend people wear them. All people. All the time.
  • I have received letters from people who hated the original Crossing Borders book cover and letters from people who LOVED it. And I mean…really loved it. Like…scary loved it. You can feel free to sound off about that or not. Writes don’t have a lot of control over their covers, but I picked the new guy. Totally, fell in love with all those freckles and said…”I want him.” Fortunately, no one thought I was a perv or anything and they liked him too.

Tuesday Teaser…

September 25, 2013 by Z.A. Maxfield

I did it again! I was off on a trip and forgot to post my Tuesday Teaser on Tuesday! MEA CULPA folks, I am not good at pre-scheduling posts!

Okay! Here’s how you do it! Guess the title of the Z.A. Maxfield book this teaser comes from to get an ebook copy of the book in question or any other book from my backlist. Be sure to give me a valid email address so I know where to send your ebook. The 5th person to email me with the correct title  WINS!

Email me at zamaxfield @ zamaxfield (dot) com and put Tuesday Teasers in the subject line!

Aaaaand…Pretty soon I’ll be inviting friends to join me here every Tuesday and hopefully, you’ll get a crack at winning a special guest author’s book. That will be fun, won’t it? (Seeing as how some of my friends are bestselling m/m romance authors and a chance to win one of their books would be AWESOME.) Look for something new come October. I’ll be kicking Tuesday Teasers: The Guest Factor into high gear during GRL month. We might even think of a new way to choose winners, maybe based on comments, instead of emails so you can leave your thoughts right here!

This Tuesday Teaser is another tough one. Shall we play GUESS THE BOOK?

Last Week’s Winners : Pat!

love of books

Whilst we’re at it, I’d like to invite you to subscribe to my newsletter, for free stories, exclusive contests, and all the news before anyone else gets it! Coming up, I have a cover reveal, a deleted scene, and more fun and games with cowboys!

“No beard.” I whispered, when I saw my whiskers had scratched his smooth skin.

“Not likely. My grandfather was Navajo. Diné. That’s why–”

“You have an amazing face.”

“I do?”

“I ain’t talking to ***.”

“Thank you.”

“It’s like all the happy in the world goes on exhibit there sometimes. I can see everything you think written all over your face.”

His lips curved into a small shy smile. “I guess I shouldn’t play cards.”

I shook my head. “Nope.”

“I like your face.” He raised his hand and thumbed my lower lip. “You’re face has character.”

“That another way of saying I should give up my dream of being a fashion model?”

“No.” He cuffed my arm lightly. “Not at all.”

“When I put character and cowboy together, I get Slim Pickens or those ‘after’ pictures of the Marlboro man when he was all sick.”

“That’s not what I meant and you know it.” He wrapped his hand around the back of my neck and brought me close. “When I look at you, it’s like seeing a really great climbing tree or a or a fast horse with an attitude. Scary—maybe a little dangerous–but I can’t help wanting to climb on and just see where it takes me.”
